Switchblade

Switchblade and James Dean

The first time I saw someone with a switchblade was James Dean in "Rebel Without a Cause". I often watched late night movies on school breaks at my grandma's house because my parents didn't let me stay up late.

My grandma always went to sleep early and she let me watch TV late at night. So I often watched movies alone. I'm not sure how old I was, but I was probably in middle school. It was great time for TV in Japan. Throughout the week, almost everyday, there were programs featuring movies from all over the world. Many of them were American movies.

This scene. Pocket knives are cool themselves. But James Dean elevated the cool factor. It stayed in the corner of my mind ever since. Through movies I became more interested in learning English. More interested in different culture.

Switchblade is a bittersweet memory of being lost and lonely. I never owned a switchblade, but kept one in my heart.

I didn't have easy adolescent days. I don't have any good memories from those days except for my cat and my grandma. My cat was my best friend and my grandma was my only safe place. 80s school life in Japan was brutal and I had a hard time. Kids around me thought I was weird. Teachers didn't like me.

Movies I watched at grandma's house had that magical ability to transport me to different worlds.
